Xerography Debt, the review zine with perzine tendencies, has started a zine review & commentary blog. XD has long made its reviews available for download via its website; now XD’s contributors will be posting reviews and other zine-related posts to its blog between issues.

Baltimore County Public Library introduced a blog for its zine collection this spring, in which they give updates on new zines in their collection, events, and other topics.

Another zine library with a worth-reading blog is Barnard College’s blog at Livejournal. Librarian Jenna Freedman is a huge champion of zines, and the blog includes highlights from Barnard’s collection, plus interesting ephemera. (Of course there’s also lots of zine communities at Livejournal, such as Zine Scene and Stolen Sharpie. And, speaking of Livejournal — did you know that Zine World’s blog is syndicated there?)

The Syndicated Zine Reviews blog is updated pretty much daily with a variety of reviews and zine news.

What other blogs did we miss? Where do you go online to keep informed about zines (other than the places we’ve got listed on our Resources page)? Let us know via email, or post a comment!

We’re working on a new issue, to be released later this summer. Zine World wants to be a great resource for all zine publishers and readers; we need your help to make that happen. The information you give us will be shared with all of Zine World’s readers, plus with visitors to our website.

Please send us:

Send info or comments on any of the above to wordofmouth@undergroundpress.org.

We also take advertising! You can submit a free classified ad (up to 50 words) for your zine, distro, diy project or group, as well as for calls-for-submissions, personals, or whatever else. Please be sure to include contact information — that means a mailing address, unless you’re just hawking a website. Display ads are super affordable, starting at just $15. Buying an ad helps us pay for printing the zine, so we can keep the cover price affordable. Email jerianne@undergroundpress.org for ad rates or to submit your classified.

And: Zine World wants to put you to work! Help us get the next issue out, and we’ll give you free zines and whatnot. Volunteers are needed for:

A lot of work goes into each issue of Zine World. The more volunteers we have, the quicker it will get done, and the quicker we can release a new issue. Email jerianne@undergroundpress.org for more details.

We plan to start posting regular round-ups of news and announcements for your information and enjoyment. If you have news to share, please send us an email: wordofmouth@undergroundpress.org.

Imagine – the anarchist zine by John Johnson — has ceased publication. So has Zinetopia, a zine review & interview zine published by Sarah Arr. John plans to continue publishing his vegan zine, Don’t Have a Cow.

Rory Root, the owner of Berkeley’s Comic Relief, died recently. Sad news, as Rory has been a great supporter of indie comics and zines, and Comic Relief is an awesome store. Find more info and some nice tributes here. A memorial celebration will be held on June 21.

In free speech news:

Finally, we’re working on a complete update to our list of zine libraries & infoshops. If you know of a place that isn’t listed, or have corrected info on a place that is listed (including closed locations) , please email jerianne@undergroundpress.org.

Hannah (of Ax Wound and other zines) has started a new podcast, featuring interviews with various zine publishers, called the Zine Core Radio Show. Episodie 1 has Jessica Disobedience, writer of Safety Pin Girl and Sad & Beautiful World, and Sarah Arr! of Zinetopia and Tazewells Favorite Eccentric, plus spoken word by Hannah and Jolie Drama. Episode 2 features Melissa Ann (She’s So Very… and lead singer of Jerk Alert!), Alex Wrekk (Stolen Sharpie Revolution, Brainscan), and Sassafras Lowery (long time zinester/distro owner & author of two upcoming books: GSA to Marriage: Stories of a Life Lived Queerly and KICKED OUT). She’s looking for future guests - zine publishers, distro owners, zine readers, event planners, zine librarians, and so on - and info to announce - calls for submissions, stuff to promote, events, etc. - on future shows. Email zinecoreradio@gmail.com if you’re interested or drop by zinecoreradio.livejournal.com for more info.

A couple other zine-related podcasts we’ve mentioned before: Fall of Autumn hosts a podcast featuring spoken word by zine folk (you can also get it via iTunes). And the Phantom Power Comics Podcast includes info and reviews about comics and other zines. Free Rent Community includes zine reviews as part of its podcasts.

Know of other zine or zinester podcasts? Email us about them (or comment on this entry)!
