worthy zine blogs
Filed Under resources, zine news | 2 Comments
Xerography Debt, the review zine with perzine tendencies, has started a zine review & commentary blog. XD has long made its reviews available for download via its website; now XD’s contributors will be posting reviews and other zine-related posts to its blog between issues.
Baltimore County Public Library introduced a blog for its zine collection this spring, in which they give updates on new zines in their collection, events, and other topics.
Another zine library with a worth-reading blog is Barnard College’s blog at Livejournal. Librarian Jenna Freedman is a huge champion of zines, and the blog includes highlights from Barnard’s collection, plus interesting ephemera. (Of course there’s also lots of zine communities at Livejournal, such as Zine Scene and Stolen Sharpie. And, speaking of Livejournal — did you know that Zine World’s blog is syndicated there?)
The Syndicated Zine Reviews blog is updated pretty much daily with a variety of reviews and zine news.
What other blogs did we miss? Where do you go online to keep informed about zines (other than the places we’ve got listed on our Resources page)? Let us know via email, or post a comment!

need info (and help!) for new issue
Filed Under ZW announcements | 4 Comments
We’re working on a new issue, to be released later this summer. Zine World wants to be a great resource for all zine publishers and readers; we need your help to make that happen. The information you give us will be shared with all of Zine World’s readers, plus with visitors to our website.
Please send us:
- Updates for our zine library / infoshop list. The next issue will include our full list (U.S. and international). Email info on new locations, closed locations, or changes to jerianne@undergroundpress.org. Please include as much contact info as possible and a brief description about your collection / services.
- Listings and recommendations for our stores & distros list. Share your recommendations on what distros or stores have done you right, either as a publisher or as a purchaser. Or tell us what places to stay away from — which ones are unreliable, don’t pay promptly, etc. Or, if you have a distro or a store that sells zines and you want to be on our list, email us with your distro’s name, website, mailing address, and a one-sentence description.
- Updates for our zine review zines list (including websites). Tell us about new review sources or ones that have stopped publishing. Please include contact information.
- Event listings, for events happening August 2008 or later. Or, if you’ve recently attended a zine event, we’d love to hear your report about how it went. (Event organizers — we’d love to hear from you, too! Share your knowledge and experience about planning, organizing, or hosting an event.)
- Other zine resources or advice — experiences with print shops; advice on or experiences with postage & mailing; deadbeat zines; advice on diy printing or equipment; online resources; or anything else you think other zinesters would want to know.
- Moved? Share youre zine’s new mailing address.
Send info or comments on any of the above to wordofmouth@undergroundpress.org.
We also take advertising! You can submit a free classified ad (up to 50 words) for your zine, distro, diy project or group, as well as for calls-for-submissions, personals, or whatever else. Please be sure to include contact information — that means a mailing address, unless you’re just hawking a website. Display ads are super affordable, starting at just $15. Buying an ad helps us pay for printing the zine, so we can keep the cover price affordable. Email jerianne@undergroundpress.org for ad rates or to submit your classified.
And: Zine World wants to put you to work! Help us get the next issue out, and we’ll give you free zines and whatnot. Volunteers are needed for:
- ad rep - We need someone to coordinate advertising for ZW, including answering advertising queries and seeking new advertisers.
- distribution / order fulfillment - We need someone to take over distribution of ZW to stores; it would be great to have someone help out with filling orders.
- art coordinator - We need someone to keep up with the art submissions and to stay in contact with artists to line up artwork for each issue.
- writers & artists - We need someone to make a cover for the next issue, as well as interior art submission. We’re also looking for a column for the next issue. Email with your ideas.
- general grunt work - typing, checking addresses, online research, etc.
A lot of work goes into each issue of Zine World. The more volunteers we have, the quicker it will get done, and the quicker we can release a new issue. Email jerianne@undergroundpress.org for more details.

news roundup, first edition
Filed Under free speech, news, zine news | Leave a Comment
We plan to start posting regular round-ups of news and announcements for your information and enjoyment. If you have news to share, please send us an email: wordofmouth@undergroundpress.org.
Imagine – the anarchist zine by John Johnson — has ceased publication. So has Zinetopia, a zine review & interview zine published by Sarah Arr. John plans to continue publishing his vegan zine, Don’t Have a Cow.
Rory Root, the owner of Berkeley’s Comic Relief, died recently. Sad news, as Rory has been a great supporter of indie comics and zines, and Comic Relief is an awesome store. Find more info and some nice tributes here. A memorial celebration will be held on June 21.
In free speech news:
- The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled last week that a high school could punish a student for publishing critical comments about school administrators on the Internet, even if the comments are published outside of school. “We have determined … that a student may be disciplined for expressive conduct, even conduct occurring off school grounds, when this conduct ‘would foreseeably create a risk of substantial disruption within the school environment,’ or at least when it was similarly foreseeable that the off-campus expression might also reach campus,” the appeals court wrote. - Two students in Massachusetts were arrested after a protest that included students commandeering their school’s intercom system during MCAS testing. A small group of students read a passage that may have been from George Orwell’s 1984. After two students were given a one-day suspension, a large group formed an impromptu sit-in. Police were called in, and they ordered the students to disperse; most did, but two were arrested. Read more…
- Thirty-four people were convicted of “unlawful free speech” for peaceful demonstrations on behalf of prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. They had been arrested at the Supreme Court in January. Read more…
- Three eighth-grade students in Minnesota received a suspension in May for not standing during the Pledge of Allegiance. Read more…
Finally, we’re working on a complete update to our list of zine libraries & infoshops. If you know of a place that isn’t listed, or have corrected info on a place that is listed (including closed locations) , please email jerianne@undergroundpress.org.

She’s looking for future guests - zine publishers, distro owners, zine readers, event planners, zine librarians, and so on - and info to announce - calls for submissions, stuff to promote, events, etc. - on future shows.
