Joining the Zine World Staff

This is a volunteer-produced publication, and we’re always looking for more volunteers. If you like what we’re doing, please help us do it better! We require only that you follow through and generally give a damn.

We need reviewers, reporters, researchers, artists, typists, clerical help, proof-readers, friends with photocopiers, friends with money and friends with stamps — whatever skills or assets you have to offer, we can and will put to good use.

If you’re a reliable, responsible person with lots of enthusiasm about zines and DIY culture, please drop us a note! Or if anyone reading this wants to start a new review zine, hey, the more voices the better! We don’t want to be "the definitive guide" to anything. If you’d like helpful hints from someone who’s been there, just get in touch.

Art

We always welcome illustrations, to overcome the inherent textiness of a review zine. All artwork should be submitted as black-and-white line drawings, and mailed flat. Depending upon editorial requirements, submissions may be reduced or enlarged in size. Preferably, humans shown in your artwork will reflect the full range of American gender, color, and cultural variety… i.e., please, not all white males.

Interior artwork should be small: 3 inches or less in height, and 5 inches or less in width.

For cover illustrations, we’re looking for artwork that’s strikingly attractive, funny, or thoughtful, and somehow related to the broad theme of zines. To save yourself time and trouble, we strongly suggest that you query first, with a description or rough sketch of your cover ideas.

Writing

If you’d like to write for Zine World, just send us a note about yourself and include 5 zine reviews, following the format we use for our reviews. (If you are not familiar with our review format and style, take a look at these sample reviews.) If you’ve got what it takes, we’ll be in touch.

We’re also looking for people to write news articles and columns. If you’re interested in writing news, please send us a note about yourself with a sample piece of writing. If you’d like to write a column, please write us with your column idea.
