The City Library Street Press group is a free and weekly workshop held at Melbourne’s City Library for all of those interested in creating their own zines, blogs, comics, and all other aspects of Street Press. The first round of workshops hosted a plethora of interesting guests, judged a high schools’ zine competition and took control of the library’s zine collection, and now we’re recommencing indefinitely on Wednesdays, 6-7:45 p.m. at City Library, 253 Flinders Lane, Melbourne, Australia.
The Independent Publishing Resource Center offers a variety of educational workshops on a variety of subjects related to publishing. The workshops are designed to give participants technical information and hands-on experience which they can apply to their individual projects. Topics include: bookbinding, design & publishing software, comic/zine/chapbook publishing, copyright law, letterpress printing, and printmaking basics. The Portland Zine Symposium will be held August 23-24 at the Portland State University campus in downtown Portland, OR. This year’s theme is: Back to DIY, Back to Community, Back to Roots. The Portland Zine Symposium aims to create greater communication and community between diverse creators of independent media and art. This fun, free and open event helps people promote their work and share skills and information related to zines and zine culture. Through hands-on and discussion-based workshops, the conference will explore the role and effect of all types of zines in and on underground and mainstream culture. The Symposium includes workshops, panel discussions, community meal fixings, and several tables for networking, selling and trading zines. Admission is free. Volunteers needed. Join us for two full days of DIY! The second annual Be Yr Own Hero Fest will be held Sept. 27 & 28 at at the Soapbox, 255 N. Front St. in Wilmington, NC. The fest will include workshops, rad bands, free food, and much more. Last year’s fest included workshops on DIY parenting, basic bicycle repair, food politics, and becoming an ally to transgender people. The Boston Zine Fair will be held Sept. 20-21 at the Art Institute of Boston, 601 Newbury St. in Kenmore Square. Formerly known as Beantown Zinetown, this event aims to bring together zinesters, artists, small presses, and other producers of independent media. The zine fair will include two full days of tabling, an opening night show with live bands and zine readings, workshops and discussion panels, and more. This Is Not Art is Australia’s premier independent, emerging, and experimental arts festival held annually in Newcastle, NSW. This year’s festival will be October 2-6. This Is Not Art is comprised of four festivals that cover electronic music and culture, independent music, critical thinking, and all kinds of writing. Oct. 5 will feature the Sunday Fair Artists Market from noon to 5 p.m. at Civic Park in Newcastle; the Fair will include DIY crafters, independent designers, record labels, zinesters, and other people who make stuff. The 2008 Small Press Expo will be held October 4-5 at the Marriott Bethesda North Hotel and Conference Center. One day admission is $8, or $15 for the weekend. The Madison Zine Fest will take place noon-6 p.m. on Oct. 18 at The Majestic Theatre, 115 King St. in Madison, Wisc. Showcase your zine, distro, library, or related project. The Alternative Press Expo is moving to the fall! This year, APE will be held November 1-2 at the Concourse in San Francisco. The most popular show of its kind in the country, with over 300 exhibitors and 4,800 attendees in 2007, APE features an incredible gathering of the very best in indy, alternative, and self-published comics, books, and zines. The Super Duper Zine Show will feature a selection of zines from around the world, in a variety of styles, genres, and interests. The Show’s goal is to showcase a wide selection of outstanding zines, and to do so in an interactive manner.
