Trash Talk with Dr. Ianto Ware, Thursday November 19 6-7PM at Sticky Institute.
Adelaide is to Australia what Australia is to the rest of the world: a beacon of bland with a penchant for producing cultural oddities. Members of Adelaide’s Format Collective, including Chloe Langford, Brigid Noone, Ianto Ware (pictured above, looking dubiously at zines) and (probably) Simon Loffler, will be at Sticky talking about their attempts to produce those cultural oddities.
Together they run the Format Festival, the Adelaide zine store, Format Press and a bunch of other stuff. They’ll talk about the ins and outs of negotiating the Badlands of Australian culture, what the world looks like outside the metropolitan centres of Sydney and Melbourne, the penchant for Adelaide artists to talk endlessly about urban planning and their experience trying to run a non-profit arts production company.
Ventures and Adventures with Maddy Phelan, Monday November 23 6-7PM, at Sticky Institute.
The search for fun in everyday life can be a difficult task. When we become dissatisfied with our social lives, what do we do for pleasure?
Maddy Phelan will raise themes from her zine ‘Adventure Time’ in regard to her recent unprofessional business venture Totoro’s Tea House, touching on Renew Newcastle, how to have fun post-TiNA, plans for a Festival of Flaneurie, and how all this relates to the pursuit of an Adventure Life.
Adelaide, Launch of 21 Nights in July, Tuesday November 24 6-8PM at Felt, 12 Crompton St.
Launch of the book that was formerly a zine. Yes, a zine book crossover and who was the man who went over to the dark side? Our fave Dr Ianto Ware, of course! It’s the first release of Format Publishing, from the collective umbrella of Format shop, Format Festival, Format Teatowels etc. This is a great night to hear Ianto discussing great cycling literature of the modern age and
providing a wide array of ‘insightful’ thoughts and overviews on the 2009 pro-cycling season.
Plus, you’ll also be able to hear Stanley Mahoney discussing the next release from Format Press, entitled “The Complete Home for the Def and Other Stories”. Part analysis of the work of Adelaide artiste Nigel Koop, part short stories, part scathing critique of the modern age and, somehow, all informative guide to self improvement.
