ONGOING EVENTS

The Independent Publishing Resource Center offers a variety of educational workshops on a variety of subjects related to publishing. The workshops are designed to give participants technical information and hands-on experience which they can apply to their individual projects. Topics include: bookbinding, design & publishing software, comic/zine/chapbook publishing, copyright law, letterpress printing, and printmaking basics. Register by Thursday, February 4 at 5pm at stickyshop@gmial.com to be part of the first awesome zine marathon for the decade. You basically succumb to peer pressure to create a zine within the space of exactly a week (Sat 6 Feb – Sat 13 Feb) so by the zine fair, you’ve got something to show off. There will be a Cometbus art show on Feb. 5 from 7-10pm at 1-2-3-4 Go Records on 423 40th St. in Oakland, CA. The show will be a retrospective of his past work in Cometbus and beyond. Check out www.1234gorecords.com for more details.

On Saturday, February 6 from 2-6pm, there will be a comic creators meet up at the Prince Alfred Hotel at 191 Grattan St Carlton in Melbourne, Australia. On February 8-26, the undiscovered press exhibition will be taking place in the Degraves Subway in Melbourne, Australia. 12 zinemakers from all around the country are unleashing their extreme and slightly undiscovered zine making practice on to the masses. Evolving into a pretty eclectic show of the art of zinesters, the participating zinesters are Androniki Douramakos, Arlene TextaQueen, Marc Martin, Brendan Halyday, Michelle Higgins, Mary-Helen Daly, Sarah Foster, On Wednesday, Diego Bonetto, Pat Grant, Michelle Vandermeer and Mel Stringer.

The Alternative Press Fair will be held on Saturday, February 13th at the St. Aloysius Social Club in London. There will be an all inclusive Small Press Fair featuring comics, zines, poetry, book arts, and print making throughout the day. There will be music and spoken word as well as an open mic in the evening. It’s free! On Saturday, February 13 in Melbourne, Australia, the mother of all zine fairs will take place from 3-8pm at City Square. Zines break out of the subway as part of the Festival of the Photocopier. This is the signature event if you will. It’ll be like American Werewolf in Paris. Tables are booked out but if you’re especially nice we might still be able to make a space for you. The Brighton Zine Fest will be taking place on February 18-21. There will be zine and craft trading, music, workshops, talks, and a vegan dinner held at various locations in Brighton. See www.brightonzinefest.co.uk for more details.

Format is a two week festival theme around DIY, artist run initiatives, and participatory culture in Adelaide, Australia. It will take place from Saturday Feb. 27-March 14th. For more details, see www.format.net.au.

Staple!, an independent media expo, will be held in Austin, Texas on March 6th 2010. It is an event to promote independent creative media such as comics, art, animation, and self-published literature. Doors open at 11am, and it is $5. For more information, check out http://www.staple-austin.org.

The 22nd small press and indie book fair is happening March 6th and 7th in Midtown Manhattan from 10-5 both days. It will be held at The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen Library at 20 West 44th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues. The Fair will feature innovative presses including Anvil Press, Black Lawrence, Seven Stories Press, Greenpoint Press, and the St. Petersburg Review, and will be a great place to purchase some one-of-a-kind books! The Broken Arts Fair will be held 3-9 p.m. March 10 at the McLaughlin branch of the Oshawa Public Libraries, 65 Bagot St., in Oshawa, Ontario. Applications open to table for zines, crafts, comics, fashion, art, baked goods, or other self-made items. The Chicago Zine Fest is an independent event creating an outlet for small press and independent publishers to showcase their work. On March 12, join us for an open mic zine reading at Quimby’s Bookstore (1854 W. North Ave.) at 7 p.m. and a zine-related art opening at Johalla Gallery, 7-10:30 p.m. March 13 will feature a day of zine exhibiting at the Conaway Center at Columbia College (1104 S. The 4th annual NYC Anarchist Bookfair will take place on April 17 from 11am-7pm at the Judson Memorial Church, which is located at 55 Washington Square South, Manhattan. UPCOMING EVENTS: SUMMER 2010

The 12th annual Allied Media Conference will be taking place on June 18-20, 2010 in Detroit. The Allied Media Conference is the central project of the Allied Media Projects (AMP) network, which emerges out of ten years of organic relationship-building. Since the first conference (then the Midwest Zine Conference) in 1999, people have been compelled by the concept of do-it-yourself media. Later, as the Underground Publishing Conference, the emphasis was on building a movement of alternative media makers. With the shift towards Allied Media, the AMC has attracted more and more people who are interested in using participatory media as a strategy for social justice organizing. The Twin Cities Zinefest will be held on July 10, 2010 from 11am-5pm in Minneapolis. This event welcomes creatives, rebels, musicians, and frustrated intellectuals to connect, create, and share ideas. As the area’s premiere DIY craft, culture, and self-publishing event, Zinefest often features an art show, live music, craft demonstrations, guest speakers, and panel discussions. The Small Press Expo will take place in Bethesda, MD on Sep. 11-12 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. Admission is $10 for one day and $15 for a weekend pass. The London Anarchist Bookfair will take place at Queen Mary’s, University of London on Mile End Road on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 10am-7pm.
