ONGOING EVENTS

The Independent Publishing Resource Center offers a variety of educational workshops on a variety of subjects related to publishing. The workshops are designed to give participants technical information and hands-on experience which they can apply to their individual projects. Topics include: bookbinding, design & publishing software, comic/zine/chapbook publishing, copyright law, letterpress printing, and printmaking basics. UPCOMING EVENTS: SUMMER 2010

Africa Needs Free Justice will be held July 20 – August 20 in Portland, Olympia, and Seattle. Organized by the Fifth Annual A World Beyond Capitalism Conference Organizers, this is a mobile event and intentional community created for the design, collaboration, and implementation of multicultural social justice projects and groups. The 24-hour zine challenge will be held in Portland, OR at the Independent Publishing Resource Center, 917 SW Oak St. #218, on July 24, starting at 10am and ending July 25 at 10am. The event supports the Portland Zine Symposium! In order to meet the challenge, the PZS 24hr Zine Challengers MUST make a 24-page zine of an original, on-the-spot conception straight up to the final product in 24 hours straight. We will be providing some supplies (paper, glue, scissors, etc), snacks, and drink – anything you can bring will help. We are also asking registrants for a $5 donation. Participate in the 24 Hour Zine Thing with Special Guests Broken Water at Northern! on saturday, July 31st at 5:30pm through sunday, August 1st at 5:30pm. The Northern is at 321 4th Ave in Olympia, WA. The Olympia Timberland Library and Northern/ the Olympia All Ages Project want to keep you up all night for the second annual 24 Hour Zine Thing workshop. Your challenge: make a 24-page zine from conception to completion in 24 hours straight. Take a break from zine creation at 8 p.m. to enjoy the musical stylings of Olympia’s own Broken Water. The event culminates with willing sleep-deprived zinesters reading from their shiny new zines on Sunday, August 1 at 3:30 p.m. Note: feel free to drop in at any point between July 31 at 5:30 p.m. and August 1 at 5 p.m. Supplies will be provided, but feel free to bring materials to use or share. The Seattle Anarchist Book Fair is set for August 21-22 at our partnered space, the Vera Project ( www.theveraproject.org ). Public hours will be 10-5 on Saturday the 21st and 11-5 on Sunday the 22nd. We are doing a general call out for submissions for both workshops and vendors. The 10th annual Portland Zine Symposium will be held on August 28-29, 2010, at the PSU Peter W. Stott Main Gym in Portland, OR. The event will be open to the public for free, and there will be tabling and workshops. For more information, please visit www.pdxzines.com.

The San Francisco Zine Fest will take place on September 4-5 at the SF County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park. It will gather over 100 creators and thousands of attendees for a free event celebrating zines, small-press comics, and DIY art of all sorts! There will be more panels and hands-on DIY workshops, a zine reading room, more vintage zines, satellite events, and other stuff too wild to even mention yet! And of course you’ll get the chance to meet and support the efforts of creators from across the West Coast and beyond, with zinesters, printmakers, illustrators, poets, cartoonists, and book artists galore. The Small Press Expo will take place in Bethesda, MD on Sep. 11-12 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. Admission is $10 for one day and $15 for a weekend pass. The Madison Zinefest will be taking place on October 2, 2010. It will be held at University of Wisconsin’s College Library in Helen C. White Hall at 600 North Park Street. The Alternative Press Expo will be held on Oct. 16-17, 2010 at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco. This is an indie comics event featuring over 325 exhibitors with alternative comics, art, zines, and DIY stuff. See www.comic-con.org/ape for more details.

The Halifax Pop Explosion is a five-day music, culture, and media festival and conference. Our 18th annual festival will be held October 19-23 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. More info at http://halifaxpopexplosion.com/.

The London Anarchist Bookfair will take place at Queen Mary’s, University of London on Mile End Road on Saturday, Oct. 23 from 10am-7pm. Along with the bookfair, there will be meetings and discussions of anarchist activity open to everyone. There will also be an anarchist cabaret. Canzine, Canada’s largest zine fair and festival of alternative culture, will be held on October 24, 1-7 p.m. at The Great Hall, 1087 Queen St. W. in Toronto. Ontario.
