Hello, everyone! It’s July, which means that we’re officially in International Zine Month! Check out the International Zine Month blog for suggestions on how to celebrate!

Here’s a note from zinester and zinecore radio producer Hannah Neurotica about zinecore radio:

“You may or may not know that I just got www.zinecoreradio.com. IT IS VERY MUCH not done, very very much a work in progress. One of the pages is a GUEST BIO page and i’d really love if you would send me a bio and photo of yourself which includes links to your projects so listeners can get in touch with you.

This coming Thursday the 9th will be the official night of the zinecore radio open mic episode. 8p-9:30pm EST. If you have been in touch about being on the open mic episode in the past please get in touch and let me know if you are still interested and available. Also, you can still sign up if you didn’t already. You can come on and read anywhere from 5-10 minutes. PLEASE EMAIL ME and let me know:

1. if you want to read on the show
2. how long your reading for as close to exact as you can
3. are you availible anytime between 8pm EST and 9:30 est PM? or do you have limitations.”

If you are in Richmond:

In honor of the first International Zine Month in July, on Thursday, July 16th, 2009 there will be a film screening at Gallery 5 (200 West Marshall Street) to benefit the Richmond Zine Fest and Pen Pals, a local animal rescue group that gives “homeless dogs and their inmate caregivers second chances and the opportunity for a new life”.

The following films will be shown:
DIY or Die: How to Survive as an Independent Artist is a 55 minute documentary from 2005 directed by independent filmmaker Michael W. Dean that features interviews with Ian MacKaye, Lydia Lunch, Richard Kern, Lynn Breedlove, Dave Brockie, Ron Asheton and many others.

Grrlyshow is an 18 minute a fun, kitschy, and creative documentary from 2001 directed by Californian independent filmmaker Kara Herold that focuses on female zine writers. Grrlyshow features the creators of the zines Bamboo Girl and Java Turtle as well as the creators of the magazines Bitch and Bust.

It’s 4 bucks. Doors open at 7:00 pm, the films begin at 7:30 pm.

And of course, July means it’s time again for the 24-hour zine thing!

“You can sign up on the site to give yourself impetus to complete it, and when you’re done you send a copy to us (the keepers of the site). We send you back a goodie bag of this year’s 24 hour zine (generally written by one of us) and this year’s 24HZT button. We also scan your cover to put up on the site. I think we’d like to scan some whole zines (with the author’s permission, of course) to feature this year.”

You have no reason not to celebrate this month! Now go make a zine!
